Visitors to the Lane School on Friday were greeted by bicycles strewn everywhere due to the huge success of Bike to School Day. 128 young cyclists participated, helped in large part by the Safe Routes to School volunteers and the warm day. I hope to see students biking to school through the next few months. Its a great way to start and end the day.

Every Friday 6 classrooms from all grades come together to discuss our monthly theme and to share “good news” about our school. These meetings are new this year and so far I have really enjoyed seeing the students stand up in front of 140 peers to help lead. This morning we had students from Ms Edwards talk about their trip to the Blue Hills with Mrs DiIrio’s gr 3 class. The video gives you a little flavor for our meetings, and how impressive it is for students to be leaders.

You can plan all summer, but there are always some worries about the first day of school. However, I am pleased to report that we had a terrific first day. The day started with all 600 students and adults making a giant circle out on the soccer field. This circle symbolized how we are all connected here at Lane, and that we are a community of learners. After creating the circle (no small task), we attempted to set the record for having the circle create “the wave” two times around. I was amazed how well the students did. We succeeded on our first try.
